Green Team
Making a difference in our school and our community
PTO volunteers help manage the school recycling/composting programs in the lunchroom. These members of the parent community also represent HW at monthly District Green Team meetings. These volunteers work with the principal and staff to promote Earth Week events in April, and other green-related events throughout the year.
Want to get involved?
If you’re interested in supporting students with lunchroom composting, you can sign up for a lunchroom shift here!
If you’re not available during lunch hours but would like to support waste reduction efforts in Winnetka, please consider joining the District-wise D36 Green Team or the HW PTO’s Green Team Committee.
You can also learn more about Zero Waste efforts in our community at Go Green Winnetka.
Hubbard Woods Composts!
The Green Team Committee at Hubbard Woods works with students in our lunchroom to help them reduce and divert food scraps from landfills and turn them into compost.
Reducing the amount of food that ends up in landfills:
reduces greenhouse gas emissions
improves soil health
reduces soil loss
increases water filtration and storage
turns food scraps into a resource
*When sending lunch from home please consider reducing use of single use plastics!
How does composting at Hubbard Woods Work?
We’ve partnered with Lakeshore Recycling Systems to collect food scraps and organics, including discarded lunchroom organics from students and staff. Unlike home composting, Lakeshore accepts ALL FOOD AND PAPER, including meat, cardboard boxes, napkins, and bones for compost. The full list of compostable items can be found here.
The compost bins at Hubbard Woods are public collection sites where anyone (HW family or not) can drop off compostable materials. Additional sites open to anyone in the community can be found here.
